Joyce Wakarima Wangui is a two-time nominee for the Kalasha awards in production design. The Kenyatta University Theatre Arts and Film Technology graduate takes pride in her role as a production manager that ensures flawless production. She made her debut through the TV series, World of Mystery, back in 2014 in her role as the set designer and props master.
In 2016, as the Assistant Art Director, set dresser and props master she helped churn out a feature film, Get Some Money and DocuDrama Unspoken. Later in the year, a great highlight in her budding career she would in her role as prop master help produce an Oscar-nominated film Watu Wote- a film based on true life events of the Mandera Bus Attack.
Her winning streak was ignited and in her final year of a student project in 2017, as Producer and Art Director of her film, The Runway went on to be nominated in several academy awards in Kenya and international film festivals.
Perhaps the greatest highlight of her career, as a props master and assistant art director was 2017 produced 18 hours- a film on emergency services in Kenya. It won the best feature film at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2018.
In the succeeding years, she offered mentorship to young filmmakers through projects including acting as art director for the film Nyota ya Africa; a Dandora slum-based high school students’ project. At one time, she was a part-time lecturer at the Nairobi Institute of Music and Performing Arts. Also taking up the role of festival coordinator and festival manager at Slum International Film Festival and UDADA International Women’s Film Festival respectively.
She has since played roles in several films and productions including, Midlife Crisis (Art Director,2019), East Africa Got Talent (Production Assistant,2019), Kinyozi (Production Manager,2020), The Good Child ((Production Manager,2020). She has also acted as assistant producer of several television commercials including Pin Pop, Frutiya Juice and K24 tv relaunch.
Other notable awards and nominations include; Best Actress The Runaway (Riverwood 2018), Best Picture and Best Director at Kalasha Awards 2018, Best Set Designer Women in Film Awards 2020 and 2021 and best Short film for IGAD on peace in 2021
She is currently producing a YouTube and Podcast Show, The Seat Down now on its second season. She is currently undertaking a bachelor’s in Modern Day Psychology at the University of Princeton.
