Chiru Muthoga

Chiru Muthoga is a climate reality leader trained under the former US Vice-President AL-Gore led Climate Reality Leadership Project in 2021. Over the last two and half years, she has had the privilege of being a team leader in an organization that grows forests on public land on the outskirts of Nairobi. They are keen to plant their seedlings and take care of them, about every six weeks, or just 9 days in a year, for 3 years.

This year, the first of their forests will mature and will have reforested their first piece of land, with indigenous African trees, which prior to their engagement was overgrown with invasive weeds. There are days when they are in their budding forest and she is reminded of two sayings. The first is, one person can make a difference and everyone should try.

The second is, start by doing what’s necessary then do what’s possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible. As they wrap up care on their first set of forests, they have gathered information and had valuable lessons learned that will help them chart a map to the impossible. She strongly believes that it is necessary for them, where possible, to grow forests in the spaces in which they live, worship, work, play and send their children to school. These forests will be invaluable investments in clean air, water and food–the essentials for life.
